Jose, Hermand… who?

EU commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso was not on the guest list to meet Pope Benedict XVI on May 1st, and were held back by guards with his wife and Italian commissioner Antonio Tajan.

Apparently The Vatican was expecting Herman Van Rompuy instead.

Earlier this year none of the EU representatives were invited to the UK wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, EUobserver wrote.

Both times Barroso or Rompuy’s assistens tried to tone down the importance of the EU representatives not being invited.

And though it is in the more peculiar end of stories it is interesting to think what this is a symbol of.

Is the EU itself still to unimportant on the global stage to get invites – even within their own geographical area?

Is the institution still to young to really be accepted by older institutions?

Are EU just bad at publicity? What would it mean for EU leaders to be at such events that draw attention all over the world?

People might be able to recognize the leaders of the European Union and the institution itself.
