4 reasons why the election in Denmark is good for Europe

Helle Thorning-Schmidt began her political career as a member of the European Parliament.

On Thursday Denmark held their parliamentary election, which removed Lars Løkke Rasmussen from the post as prime minister, and put Helle Thorning-Schmidt as Denmark’s first female prime minister.

Here is 4 reasons why this is remarkable to the European Union.

1. The reinstated borders in Denmark will be removed.

2. The new prime minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, is a former member of the European Parliament – she knows EU very well, and this can be a huge advantage, when Denmark take over the presidency of EU after Poland in the spring 2012.

3. For the last decade the government coalition has been depended on their right-wing supporting party, Danish Peoples Party, which is a big opponent of the European Union. This is probably the most influential anti-immigrant party in Europe, and their parliamentary strength has now weakened. They lost three mandates in the election – this is the first loss in the history of the party.

4. The new coalition with Helle Thorning-Schmidt as prime minister also needs support from the left-wing red-green party. They are also very sceptical towards EU, but in the new coalition, a very pro-EU party, the Radical Left, will not allow the government to be depended on the red-green party, which will force Helle Thorning-Schmidt to make decisions with the former government parties, the liberals and conservatives, which is also pro-EU.
